about this tool

Four sums for the end of term

  • course grade — a grade from marks and their weights, with its letter.
  • final exam — the score you need on the final for the grade you want.
  • GPA — from letter grades and credits, on the 4-point scale or the 10-point scale used by many Indian universities.
  • CGPA & % — a CGPA from each semester's SGPA, and a CGPA as a percentage by your board's or university's formula.

Every answer updates as you type. Try Sample in each to see it filled in.

Course grade

Type each piece of work as a percentage, with its weight in the course: homework 92 worth 20, a midterm 78 worth 30. The grade is each mark times its weight, added up and divided by the total weight — so weights of 20, 30, 20 and 30 work, and so do 1, 2 and 1. If the weights add up to something other than 100, the page says so, since a missing piece of work is the usual reason. Leave every weight empty for a plain average.

The letter is the common US scale: 97 and up A+, 93 A, 90 A−, 87 B+, 83 B, 80 B−, and on down to 60 for a D−; below that is an F. Schools vary, so treat it as a guide.

The final exam

With your grade so far, the share of the course the final is worth, and the grade you want, the score needed is

(target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight

with the weight as a fraction. At 84% so far, with a final worth 30% and a target of 85%, that is 87.33%. If even full marks would not get there, the page says so; if a zero would still do, it says that too.

GPA

Pick the scale, then each course's grade and credits; changing the scale clears the grades, since the letters mean different things. On the 4-point scale, A and A+ are 4, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3, B− 2.7, and so on to an F at 0. On the 10-point scale, O is 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6, C 5, P 4, and F and Ab (absent) 0. The GPA is the sum of points × credits divided by the total credits; leave the credits empty and every course counts once.

CGPA and percentage

Type each semester's SGPA, and its credits if your university weights semesters by them; the CGPA is then the credit-weighted average, or the plain one. Already know your CGPA? Type it under convert instead. To turn a CGPA into a percentage, pick the formula your board or university uses:

  • cbse × 9.5 — CBSE's rule for its Class 10 CGPA, which some universities borrow: 8.4 is 79.8%.
  • × 10 — used by some universities.
  • (cgpa − 0.75) × 10 — given in AICTE's 2018 examination-reform guidance and used by some universities.
  • my own — CGPA times the number your university gives.

When in doubt, the formula on your marksheet or your university's rules is the one that counts. A percentage can be turned back into the CGPA it needs too; one that would need more than 10 is out of that formula's reach, and the page says so.

questions

How do I work out a weighted grade?
Type each mark as a percentage with its weight — homework 92 at 20, the midterm 78 at 30, and so on. Each mark is multiplied by its weight and the total divided by the sum of the weights, so the weights need not add up to 100. Leave every weight empty and the marks are simply averaged. The letter shown is the usual US one: 97 and up is an A+, 93 an A, 90 an A−, 87 a B+, and so on down to below 60, an F.
What do I need on my final exam?
Give your grade so far, what the final is worth, and the grade you want. If the final is worth w per cent, the score needed is (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. With 84% so far, a final worth 30% and a target of 85%, that is 87.33%. The page says too when the target is out of reach even with full marks, or already safe with a zero.
How is GPA calculated?
Each course’s grade is turned into points — on the 4-point scale an A is 4, a B+ 3.3, a B 3 — and multiplied by its credits; the total is divided by the total credits. On the 10-point scale many Indian universities use, O is 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6, C 5 and P 4. Leave the credits empty and every course counts the same.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
It depends who is asking. CBSE’s rule for its Class 10 CGPA is CGPA × 9.5, so 8.4 is 79.8%, and some universities borrow it. Others multiply by 10, use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 as AICTE’s 2018 guidance gives, or publish their own multiplier — choose my own and type it. Type a CGPA straight in to convert it, or a percentage to go the other way; your university’s own rule is the one that counts.
How is CGPA worked out from SGPA?
CGPA is the average of each semester’s SGPA, weighted by that semester’s credits: the sum of SGPA × credits, divided by the total credits. If every semester carries the same credits, or you leave them empty, it is the plain average of the SGPAs.
