about this tool

Generating placeholder text

Choose how much you want and in what unit — paragraphs, sentences, words, or a list of items — up to 200 at a time. Output comes as plain text, HTML with <p> or <li> tags already around it, or Markdown, so it can go straight into a template without reformatting.

By default the first paragraph opens with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", the phrase that makes it instantly recognisable as filler. Turn that off if you want text that does not announce itself.

The Markdown output pastes straight into the Markdown editor for a preview, and the word counter will tell you whether it fills the space you have.

Why Latin, and why this Latin

The passage comes from Cicero's de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC, garbled by centuries of typesetters. Printers have used it since the 1500s for a practical reason: it has the letter frequencies and word lengths of real European prose, so a layout set in it looks like a layout with text in it, while nobody tries to read it.

That last part is the point. English filler gets read, and then discussed. Put "The quick brown fox" in a mockup and a reviewer will comment on the fox. Put Latin in and they will look at the typography, which is what you asked them to look at.

When to use something else

Lorem ipsum is a poor choice when the text itself is the thing under review. It has no long words, no numbers, no proper nouns and no email addresses, so it will not reveal that your card breaks on a German compound noun, that a name overflows at two lines, or that a 40-character URL escapes its container. For those, real content or deliberately awkward strings will tell you more.

It is also a bad idea anywhere it might survive to production. "Lorem ipsum" has shipped in printed annual reports, on billboards and in App Store listings more than once, because filler is invisible to the person who put it there.

A note on accessibility testing

Screen reader users get no benefit from placeholder text, and a page full of it cannot be sensibly navigated by headings. If you are testing an assistive experience, use text with real structure and meaning instead.

questions

Where does lorem ipsum come from?
From Cicero's de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC and garbled by centuries of typesetters. Printers have used it since the 1500s because it has the letter frequencies and word lengths of real European prose.
Why use Latin instead of English placeholder text?
Because English filler gets read and then discussed. Put recognisable English in a mockup and reviewers comment on the words; put Latin in and they look at the typography, which is what you asked them to review.
Can I get it as HTML or Markdown?
Yes. Output is available as plain text, HTML with paragraph or list tags already applied, or Markdown, so it can go straight into a template without reformatting.
When is lorem ipsum the wrong choice?
When the text is what you are testing. It has no long words, numbers, proper nouns or URLs, so it will not reveal that your layout breaks on a German compound noun or a 40-character link. Use real or deliberately awkward content for that.
How much can I generate at once?
Up to 200 paragraphs, sentences, words or list items per run, generated in the page with no request to a server.
