about this tool

Words on a picture

Choose a picture — a photo, a screenshot, or one pasted straight from the clipboard — and type. There are two ways to set the words:

  • Top & bottom: the classic meme. White capitals with a black outline over the picture, a block of words at the top and one at the bottom. Each may take about a quarter of the picture's height at most, and shrinks to fit as you type.
  • Caption above or caption below: a white bar the width of the picture with the words in dark type, in ordinary case — the way most captioned pictures are made now. The bar grows to hold the words.

Press Enter in a box to break a line where you want it; otherwise the words wrap on their own. Capitals, the font and the black outline can be switched; each layout starts with its usual look.

The font

Memes are known for Impact, but Impact is not on most phones, and a meme drawn in whatever face a device has to hand looks different everywhere. So the page brings its own: bold condensed is Anton, an open font close to Impact, and plain is Noto Sans Bold. Letters neither has — Devanagari, Tamil, emoji — are drawn in your device's own font, so they still appear.

Saving it

Download PNG saves the picture with its words, no watermark and nothing else added. Copy picture puts it on the clipboard to paste into a chat. A photo larger than 2,400 pixels on its longer side is scaled down to that, which keeps the file sensible and is more than any feed shows; the words scale with the picture, so a small picture and a large one look alike.

There are no templates: the famous meme pictures belong to whoever took or drew them. Use your own, or one you have the right to use.

Private

The picture is decoded, drawn and saved in your browser; nothing is uploaded. To blur a face or a number out of a screenshot first, use photo censor; to crop the picture to shape, resize and crop.

questions

How do I make a meme?
Choose a picture — a photo, a screenshot, or one pasted from the clipboard — and type the top and bottom text. The words are drawn in white with a black outline, in capitals, and shrink to fit as you type. Then download the PNG or copy it straight into a chat.
Can I put the caption above the picture instead?
Yes. Choose caption above, or caption below, and the words go in a white bar the width of the picture, in a plain face and ordinary case, the way captions are usually written now. The bar grows to hold the words.
Is there a watermark?
No. The PNG is exactly the picture and the words, with nothing added.
Which font does it use?
Bold condensed is Anton, an open font close to the Impact that memes are known for — Impact itself is not on most phones, so the page brings its own and every device draws the same picture. Plain is Noto Sans Bold. Letters either face lacks, such as Devanagari or emoji, are drawn in your device’s own font.
Are there meme templates?
No: the picture is yours. The well-known meme pictures belong to the people who took or drew them, so the page does not ship them; use a photo of your own, a screenshot, or a picture you have the right to use.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The picture is drawn and saved by your browser; nothing is uploaded or kept. A very large photo is scaled down to 2,400 pixels on its longer side, which is plenty for any chat or feed.
